There's some black metal guitar buzzing, some treated guitar, some ambient shimmer and murk, and even a stab at a mix of black metal, Einsturzende Neubaten, and krautrock a la Aluk Todolo (on the last track).

The new, "proper" album from Arha. Frozen Woods of Farmington is 11 tracks of mostly orthodox black metal, with one Esoteric-influenced ambient drone doom track "Glass Skeletal Fingers Against Lugh", played on slide guitar. The vocals are more adequately mixed this time out, and the overall atmosphere is one of solitary walks in the cemetery and woods by the river in mid-winter in the Northeast, very evocative of both time and place.

Flat Horizon Sabbat is the new Arha recording. It consists of more psych-noise-drone, and is inspired by star-gazing. I've been going out into my back yard every night and trying to really look closely at the progression of the constellations. Incidentally, I've also been listening to tons of Amm and MEV, and to some extent, these tracks are inspired by the spirit of late 60's anything goes experimentation. My next spring releases will be a Fahey/Basho/Bishop/Renbourn/Rose/Blackshaw/Jansch/Jones rip-off by Rose Hips, and then a crust/doom thing, inspired by my recent obsession with the new Darkthrone, along with my self-proclaimed Hessian status. I've been influenced, mood-wise, by Runes Order, Expo 70, newer Earth, and Bohren & der Club of Gore, along with Circle, and Black Magus. Repetition and heavy effects processing are the name of the game, although I've been thinking about doing a big Rose Hips kick (my relatively unprocessed guitar improv project), as I've also been revisiting Derek Bailey and James "Blood" Ulmer of late, so who knows....

I recently read the excellent story, "Calcutta, Mother of Nerves", by Poppy Z. Brite, in the fantastic zombie fiction anthology, The Living Dead, edited by John Joseph Adams, and published by nightshade books. I was so struck by the imagery of decay, rebirth, and cosmic eternity contrasted with debased, massed humanity. I was inspired to record three zombie related tunes: Goofer Dust, which is a dark ambient piece, based on processed vocals and nylon-string Spanish guitar (Goofer Dust is dedicated to Zora Neale Hurston, and "goofer dust" is the expression used by voodoo practitioners to refer to grave dust. It was believed that grave dust had magical properties, including the ability to restore a murder victim to life for long enough to avenge their deaths by horribly slaughtering their killer. The other two pieces are "A Gash In The Universe", which is a funeral doom/noise piece, which is dedicated to Poppy Z. Brite, and by extension, Mother Kali, and "The Stars Are Out and Shining", which is an ambient/noise piece. I started out with heavily treated and effected voice and guitar samples from other pieces, then mixed them down and treated them with echo, reverb, and drenched them in delay. The resulting piece sounds a little like a field recording. I love sound manipulation......

Beneath is the new recording from Arha. From Intro, which is a Tangerine Dream/Neptune Towers style electronic piece, the recording goes into Catacombs and As It Is Above, So Shall It Be Below which are Drone Doom pieces, with pendulum picking and other Black Metal touches. There is a short electronic interlude, and then the recording closes with Grey Sky, which is a dark ambient murk-fest, with processed voices and bursts of guitar and sine noise interspersed here and there. Enjoy? Is that an appropriate word to use with this type of cathartic, repetitive sludge? Do what thou wilt, that is the whole of the Law......

Coreopsis the Blog Lives, Coreopsis the Band is No More!

I have been more active in Last Fm recently, and I noticed that there is a metal-core band from Texas, also called Coreopsis. I consulted with Depression Exorcism, and the general consensus was to change the name of my project. The same thing happened to Middian, and from what I've seen, the more established (pop-punk)band usually wins the name-thing battle. From now on, all of my recordings will be under the name Arha. The name is from Ursula K. LeGuin's Earthsea books, and as she is the priestess of the Tombs of Atuan, and dark cavernous sounds (alternating with shimmering airy ones) are my thing, that's what I'm going with. I'm keeping Coreopsis as the blog name, because I love Coreopsis flowers, and they ring the Coreopsis Manor, so they serve a symbolic purpose.

I recently finished reading August Derleth's Cthulu Mythos. This inspired me to create a suite of tracks based on the four essential elements: Earth, Air, Water, and Fire. The pieces are dark ambient, ritual, Kraut-influenced rhythmic psychedelic noise.

Some new Coreopsis/Depression Exorcism recordings. The tracks go together to form an ahem.... concept album of sorts, with the first half examining the effects of climate change on the globe- if the effects of global warming reverse because of extreme weather, resulting in endless freezing rain, which will devastate agriculture and make Earth a generally miserable place to live. The second half celebrates science and the frontier of the near future- space and interstellar travel, which could spell out a signpost for where humanity could go. The black metal piece is mostly atmospheric, but is pro-human, along with being pro-Gaia, and celebratory of the Old Religion, and the psychedelic space-rock harkens back to the heady days of the 1970's when a combination of eco-pessimism and stardust dreams led Dick, LeGuin, Heinlein, Moorcock, etc. to look to the skies and consider.

These pieces are manipulated voice and guitar. The "Finch" series was inspired by watching finches perched in the mini maple (which sits in the shade of The Mighty Maple). Rose Selavy is a 30 min. dark ambient piece for manipulated guitar, voice, and sampled orchestra. The industrial percussion effect was also sampled, from a moog/sitar album from 1970 by Ananda Shankar.

Tobe Hooper, The Man, The Myth, The Legend

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is really, truly, one of the best films ever made. It captures the true essence of a nightmare. Come on, you've all had this scenario play out in your unconscious mind: trapped in an unfamiliar location, stalked by a relentless, unreasonable force set on ending your terrestrial existence with a powertool. Plus, there is social commentary on a par with George Romero's original Night of the Living Dead: family run slaughterhouses and ranchers are run out by cut-rate meat packers and the factory-food machine! All Amebix fans and vegan hardcore punx should run right out and watch this film! Plus, it's a pretty accurate depiction of the Wisconsin-based serial killer Ed Gein's sartorial and decorative sensibility, if nothing else! In all seriousness, though, the pacing, editing, camerawork, et al is fantanstic, and Tobe Hooper's original score is the kind of authentic Industrial time-lag accumulator type shit that TG would produce two years down the line. What I have done here is to gild the lily, so to speak: I remixed and grabbed pieces of the O.S.T, and created new dark-ambient pieces from them. Please watch the original film! It'll scare the hell out of you, and make you think.

I was reading an article on Erik Davis' blog Techgnosis (check the blogroll for link), and he wrote at length about how modern air travel is a transitional experience similar to the Tibetan Book of the Dead "Bardo" experience. I find that my summer vacation (I'm a middle school teacher) is a similar interzone of experience. Time slows to a gelatinous crawl, and everything seems slightly unreal in the heat and humidity. The dog and I spend hours together in mutual mind-meld, contemplating the dragonflies hovering above the fifteen-foot sunflowers in the garden. I spend way too much time on the interweb, and record a lot.

What's the Story Behind the House?

The picture of the house on the header of this blog is the Coreopsis House. It was built in 1850, and in many ways, is unique. Most houses of the time in this part of New Hampshire were post and beam, and this house has a balloon frame. It also has no fireplaces, and was heated by a central coal furnace, which was a major technological innovation for the time. It was tiny in comparison to the mill owners' homes and row houses that make up the rest of the town, and at some point was moved from the center of Farmington to its present location, which in the 1880's was right on the railroad tracks which connected Boston to Lake Winnepausaukee, a major vacation destination at the time. The house has a welcoming feel, but there is also a deep atmosphere present within, and it is easy to completely lose track of time and of the world outside when you are inside. There is also a sense of incredible space, in spite of the fact that the interior is less than 900 square feet, including the kitchen and screen porch, which were early 20th century additions. I will post some more recent photos, which include the amazing decorative plantings designed and installed by Mrs. Coreopsis.

Depression Exorcism Thinks About Classical Music

This is a recent ritual, captured by the members of Depression Exorcism. The London Philharmonia put up an extensive library of orchestral samples, and this discovery led to a group discussion of the role of "classical" or "concert" music in contemporary society. Depression Exorcism is attracted to the idea of composition, and the timbres of orchestral music, but lacks the resources to employ the rather expensive services of classically trained musicians, to be brought in from outside the community. In addition, as they are very secretive and will not record outside of Intervale, the discovery of compositional materials provided by the London Philharmonia was a gift straight from Calliope. This music was manifested on a rainy night in August, with the members of Depression Exorcism seated in a half-moon formation, and clad in purple velvet tuxedos, with the exception of the conductor, who was ceremonially sky-clad, and who conducted with a wand formed from a branch of the Mighty Maple.

Depression Exorcism is from Intervale, New Hampshire. They recorded this album, which is also called Depression Exorcism, under a waterfall that is located directly on the border between the U.S. and Canada. All sounds on the recording were sourced from an 8-track copy of "Voice of the Turtle", which had been previously left out in the rain during one of the band's extended, ritualistic performances.
The pieces on the album are based on a programmatic song cycle, which follows the progress of the Earth as it cools, then forms into megacontinents.
At the center of the album is a ritual, recorded in real time, entitled: "Regeneration". Stones, wood, iron, and water were all used, along with the human voice, to invoke water-logged and cthonic elder forces alike.
Depression Exorcism have released this press statement: Depression Exorcism is love.
We strive to communicate the big stories- epic scope has always been our perspective. Living as we do in a liminal space on the border, we find that the possibilities blend as categories strain and crack....

I was trying out a midi recording program, looking to inject a little Xhol Caravan/Ex-Magma flavor into my stuff. The data didn't transfer to Audacity correctly, and it created this cool percussive glitch. I edited it into a couple of pieces, and, as usual, over treated/manipulated the data. iii and Towers Open Fire are extended experiments with repetition, and the Towers Open Fire series is transitional. I'm going to work on more minimal/acoustic stuff in the next couple of weeks

Last Burroughs Mix

I recreated the mix of Inflexible Authority. For it, I mixed Burroughs reading with a multitracked, manipulated recording of the Gnawa Brotherhood of Morocco. Burroughs was very interested in the trance inducing properties of the music created by the Gnawas, along with the Master Musicians.

I remixed/repurposed three more tracks from William S. Burroughs "Call Me Burroughs" album from 1968. The idea was to bring in Burroughs/Gysin's idea of the cut-up, or third mind to the composition process. No Bueno is more of a traditional dub style, while the other two, Fish Poison Con and Croaker's Conference fit into a post-industrial/dark ambient style. I had a fourth mix, based on Inflexible Authority, going, but Audacity crashed on me, and that was my signal that I was done for the day!
